Background
Thai Lilac and Thai Blue Point Cats are cats which are sometimes produced in Korat to Korat matings. The Blue Point pattern appeared from around the mid seventies, and the Lilac colour since 1989. They both probably first appeared in Korat matings in their country of origin, Thailand, as Korats have not been outcrossed since their arrival in the west.
Thai Lilacs have been included in the Korat Registration Policy, for GCCF registration purposes only, since 1994. Until 1996 it was believed that descendants of one import only were carriers, or possible carriers, of the recessive gene responsible for the lilac colour. However, in that year, descendants of Korats recently imported into the UK from Thailand, produced Lilac kittens. This event created more widespread interest amongst breeders and opened up the possibility of increasing the gene pool.
Thai Blue Points could only be GCCF registered with this name from 1997 when the Korat Breed Advisory Committee (KBAC) included them within the Korat Registration Policy. There are also reports of them in other western countries, indicating that this recessive gene could be quite widespread. Many of the non-registered ancestors of Korats imported into the USA as foundation stock were designated as Blue Point or Seal Point Siamese.
At the GCCF Council meeting held on 20/2/2002 Preliminary Show Recognition was granted for Thai Lilacs and Thai Blue Points. The Thai Lilac has been assigned the Breed Number (34 c) and the Thai Blue Point the Breed Number (34 40 2).
